چکیده

High speed photometry of the helium-transferring binary ES Cet – taken over a two-year period (2001 October – 2003 October) – shows a very stable photometric period of 620.211437 ± 0.000038 s, with a tentative indication of curvature in the O–C diagram suggesting a change in period at a rate of Ṗ ∼ 1.6×10 . Phase-resolved spectroscopy of ES Cet obtained with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope shows a clear modulation on the photometric period, the assumed orbital period. We have followed a newly identified AM CVn star (‘2003aw’) photometricaly through its 2003 February/March outburst during which it varied in brightness over a range of V = 16.5 – 20.3; we find a superhump period of 2041.5 ± 0.3 s. Questions are raised about the reality of the detected spin-up in RXJ0806 (Hakala et al. 2003; Strohmayer 2003).

Magnetic CVs in the UCT CCD CV Survey

An overview is given of all the magnetic CVs found in the UCT CCD CV Survey (Woudt & Warner 2001, 2002, 2003a). We have identified eight new candidate Intermediate Polars (IP), of which six are classical novae (RR Cha, DD Cir, AP Cru, V697 Sco, V373 Sct, and RXJ1039.7-0507). The two other candidate IPs are Aqr1 (2236+0052) and RXJ0944.5+0357. In addition, there are two probable Polars, namely V...

CSS100603:112253111037: a heliumrich dwarf nova with a 65min orbital period

We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy of the dwarf nova CSS100603: 112253−111037. Its optical spectrum is rich in helium, with broad, double-peaked emission lines produced in an accretion disc. We measure a line flux ratio He I λ5876/Hα = 1.49 ± 0.04, a much higher ratio than is typically observed in dwarf novae. The orbital period, as derived from the radial velocity of the line wings,...

The population of AM CVn stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

The AM Canum Venaticorum stars are rare interacting white dwarf binaries, whose formation and evolution are still poorly known. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey provides, for the first time, a sample of 6 AM CVn stars (out of a total population of 18) that is sufficiently homogeneous that we can start to study the population in some detail. We use the Sloan sample to ‘calibrate’ theoretical populat...

The Hidden Population of AM CVn Binaries in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We present results from a spectroscopic survey designed to uncover AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries hidden in the photometric database of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The discovery of only 7 new AM CVns in the observed part of our sample suggests a lower space density than previously predicted. Based on the complete g ≤ 19 sample, we calculate an observed space density for AM CVns...

SDSS J080449.49+161624.8: a peculiar AM CVn star from a colour-selected sample of candidates

We describe a spectroscopic survey designed to uncover an estimated ∼40 AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) stars hiding in the photometric data base of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have constructed a relatively small sample of about 1500 candidates based on a colour selection, which should contain the majority of all AM CVn binaries while remaining small enough that spectroscopic identification ...
